Blue Hill—Breaking a nine-game winning streak and undefeated record, the Ellsworth varsity girls shut down the GSA Lady Eagles 38-33 on Monday, January 9. George Stevens scrambled from behind from the start, as Ellsworth grabbed the tip-off and scored their first points within 30 seconds.
The Ellsworth team used a strong defense to shut down the Eagles, regularly double-teaming senior Morgan Dauk, who led GSA with 16 points.
Trailing by six at the end of the first quarter, GSA saw the margin widen by the half as Ellsworth lead 23-17 and 30-19 at the end of the third quarter.
A late surge in the final quarter, and a clutch shot by sophomore Juliana Allen at the game buzzer, narrowed Ellsworth’s lead to five for the 38-33 finish.
Two weeks ago, the story ended on a different page, when GSA beat Ellsworth 51-37, racking up Heal Points with the win over the Class B team.
The GSA Lady Eagles are 9-1 and stand at the top of the Heal rankings, ahead of Stearns (9-0) and Madawaska (8-0).
