Deer Isle—The girls basketball team lost its opener to George Stevens 55-23 on December 9. We struggled with our offense in the first half and trailed 28-8 at the half. It was not surprising that this young team will have to work on offense as the season progresses.
The two places we had problems were turnovers and getting rebounds. GSA hurt us inside with many second chance shots and the strong play of their forwards. I would estimate that half our turnovers happened when we tried to force the ball inside when the pass wasn’t there. Overall, we dealt with the press pretty well, which is a plus for a young team.
I was impressed with the play of freshmen Katie Hutchinson and Brienna Limeburner in their first varsity game. They will help us to have depth with more games played. I’m sure coach Randy Shepard was looking for more offense, but I feel there were a lot of positives from this game despite the loss. Lily Gray led us with 8 points, Brienna Limeburner 6, Jesslyn Gove 5, and Orly Vaughan and Katie Hutchinson 3.
