Blue Hill—In a tight fourth quarter that saw Bucksport pull within one point with 38 seconds on the clock, the George Stevens Academy Eagles pulled out a 50-47 victory on December 14.
Solid shooting from the foul line made the difference, Coach Bill Case said. “We made our last eight free throws, six by Morgan [Dauk] and two by Mazie [Smallidge].”
Dauk poured in a total 24 points after a slow start in the first half, including eight foul shots. Cora Gray chipped in 6 points, Julianna Allen and Margaret Brooks each netted 4, while Mazie Smallidge scored 12 towards the win.
Smallidge, a sophomore who swung last year from the JV team, has formed a powerhouse duo with Dauk on court.
“Mazie has worked very hard between seasons,” Case said. “She has terrific potential and has become more aggressive.”
The win puts the team 2-2 for the season, after a close 53-49 loss at Calais on December 11—despite a rally after trailing 17-6 at the end of the first quarter. Dauk lead with 24 points, and Smallidge scored 10.
Case said a string of three away games took its toll and the team is looking forward to playing at home against Sumner on Friday, December 18.
“We’re gradually improving at the guard…We’re a work in progress,” he said.
