Blue Hill—After walloping Dexter 5-0 on October 16, the George Stevens Academy boys soccer team closed out the season with a 1-1 draw against Orono on October 18.

The tie was the second of the season between the two teams. The Eagles tied the Red Riots 2-2 in the first contest.

The Eagles have had a storied history with Orono over the last two seasons. Last season’s quarterfinal contest between the two teams took two full games to complete, after the first game was called because of darkness after neither team could score a winning goal after several overtime periods. The second game was played in blustering conditions on the Husson University campus, where the Red Riots took the 3-2 win.

This year, the two teams are tight in the standings, with George Stevens Academy in third and Orono in fourth. Should the standings stay the same, both teams will get a bye into the quarterfinals. If they continue deep into the postseason, the earliest opportunity for a grudge match would be in the Class C North regional finals.

With the regular season in the books, the Eagles will now turn their attention to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs, which is scheduled for next week, October 30. Coach Mark Ensworth said that he hopes to schedule a scrimmage for his team during the gap, to keep them loose.

If the Eagles stay in third place, they will play the sixth seed in the quarterfinals. The team currently in sixth is Central High School, which GSA did not face in the regular season.
