Eagles solid at PVC track and field championships Varnum takes first in shot put

Bucksport—Thirteen teams competed under intermittent sprinkles and chilly temperatures May 24 in the Penobscot Valley Conference track championships.

The George Stevens Academy boys team placed sixth and the girls team fourth, with senior LeeAnn Varnum easily winning the shot put title with a 31’5” throw, 16 inches ahead of the remaining field.

Sophomore Grace Broughton contributed 10 points in individual events—second place in the 300 meter hurdles and fifth in the 100 meter dash— to the team’s 50.5 points total score. She also contributed to a third place finish in the 400 meter relay, with freshmen Lannea Zentz and Luna Perry-St.Peter and senior Susanna Jakub, and a fourth in the 100 meter relay, with Jakub, senior Ivy Manner-Wheelden and sophomore Elia O’Hara.

The 800 meter relay team of Zentz, seniors Tess Williamson and Oshi Ragot and sophomore Anna Gagne placed second, as did the boys relay team of seniors Meredith Bradshaw Thomas, Eric Mote and Jeremiah Scheff and freshman Clark Morrison.

The boys team finished with 41 points, with sophomore Ian Renwick placing second in the long jump and fourth in the 200 meter dash for a combined 12 points. Renwick teamed up with Bradshaw Thomas, senior Daniel Li and sophomore Michael Moon for a fourth place finish in the 100 meter relay, and with Moon, Thomas and Scheff for another fourth in the 400 meter relay. Sophomore Oliver Wilson took fourth in the 1600 meter race walk.

Caribou swept the boys title with 176 points and Orono the girls title with 173 points.

The June 1 state championships in Farmington will finish up the Eagles’ 2019 season.
