BANGOR – The perfect season has come to an end for the Deer Isle-Stonington High School girls basketball team, as the team lost a 49-62 Class D North regional final to defending state champion Southern Aroostook on February 23 at the Cross Insurance Center.
The Warriors jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first quarter, but four straight points from Katie Hutchinson and Kaylee Morey cut the lead to two with about five minutes left. Southern Aroostook pulled away to take a 20-12 advantage after the first quarter.
After a DISHS bucket by Brittany Gray to open the second quarter, the Warriors stretched the lead to 10 with a two-point jumper en route to a 19-point quarter that had the Mariners trailing 24-39 at the half.
Southern Aroostook started off the third quarter the way they ended the second, putting the first two points of the second half on the board just 10 seconds in. The Mariners were able to chip away at the lead, and trailed by 13 to start the final quarter of play.
The Mariners went on a couple short runs in the fourth quarter, but Southern Aroostook’s lead and defense was too much to overcome.
Taylor Hardy led her team in scoring with 14 points, while Lily Gray had nine in her final season in a Mariner uniform. Kaylee Morey contributed eight points.
Deer Isle-Stonington finished the season 18-1, and has gone unbeaten in the regular season the last two years.
