Deer Isle—The girls basketball team beat Bucksport 59-31 on December 20. We jumped out to a 19-3 lead in the first quarter and this allowed coach Randy Shepard to work in the subs over the rest of the game, with most all the starters out for the fourth quarter. This allows the other players to get valuable experience on the floor in game situations while the starters are more focused on passing. Kaylee Morey led us with 16 points, Rylee Eaton had 15, Katie Hutchinson had 10, and Brienna Limeburner had six.
The girls beat Greenville 45-28 on December 29. We played a solid game, leading 31-17 at the half. It was a team win with solid defense, making 19 steals and rebounding well. Everybody played, and we limited our turnovers. Rylee Eaton led us with 22 points, Lily Gray had eight, Katie Hutchinson had six and Brienna Limeburner had four points, four steals, and eight rebounds. Kaylee Morey had seven assists, six steals, and six rebounds.
The girls are 6-0 and managed to stay at the top of Class D with the Greenville win. We are playing solid team ball and have been able to stay focused for all 4 quarters. We are looking like the top contender that we were hoping to be.
The boys basketball team lost to Searsport 75-67 on December 18. I think Searsport is going to be re-named foul territory. Like the game the girls played there, the fouls mount up one sided for the opponents. We were called for 32 fouls and Searsport only 12. That made a huge difference in the game. We controlled the first half and led 40-34 at the half. Searsport slowly took control in the second half as our players had to sit and eventually foul out.
I don’t like to whine about officiating, but the only answer to a situation like this is for us to take care of business when we play them at home. This was another game where we came to play and worked well together. Myles Brown led us with 19 points, Nathan Thompson had 16, Tobey Snow had 12, Zach Billings had six, and Dillan Steele had five.
The boys lost to Bucksport 70-36 on December 20. The energy that we had shown in the previous two games just wasn’t there and we trailed 32-7 at the half. We came out fired up after the half and scored 20 points in the third, but we couldn’t slow down Bucksport, so we were still down 28 points after three quarters. Bucksport used their height and experience around the basket to have their way with us. We looked like a young team that is trying to find itself. Myles Brown led us with 16 points, all in the third quarter, Coleman Brown had six, and Dillan Steele had four.
The boys beat a good Greenville team 49-40 on December 29 It was a back and forth game where we trailed 24-20 at the half. We adjusted our defense and rebounded better to take the lead 36-28 after three quarters. We played good team ball and did well in transition. We played hard and it paid off. The only down side was poor foul shooting, which luckily didn’t hurt us at the end. Myles Brown led us with 16 points, Coleman Brown had 15, and Nathan Thompson had eight.
The boys are 2-4 but are in the top four in Class D with both our wins being big ones. We are playing very well together with a lot of hustle. We are surprising teams with our inspired play and possibly even ourselves. Our confidence and energy is contagious and our over-achieving play is fun to watch.
