Ellsworth—Few in numbers but strong in the events entered, the Eagle varsity swim team already has five swimmers whose times qualify them for the state meet February 19 and 20 at Bowdoin College.

The Eagles fell to both Ellsworth and Carlisle at a meet January 26 at the Down East Family YMCA in Ellsworth.

“With a very small team it’s very difficult to get on the positive side on the ledger as far as the score is concerned,” Coach Don Driscoll said.

Seniors Ava Sealander, Ellie Gellerson and Elana Bakeman, junior Jeremiah Scheff, and freshman Henry Scheff will compete in individual events at the state championships, as will boys and girls relay teams in the 200 meter medley and 200 meter free style events. Sealander is undefeated in all her events this season, Driscoll noted.

The Eagles have one regular season meet left, Thursday, February 1, in Ellsworth, which is seniors night. Next, the teams compete at the Penobscot Valley Conference championships in Orono, February 9 for the boys and February 10 for the girls, before the field narrows to the top swimmers at the state meet.

“The PVC championship will be fun as we can bring our entire team,” Driscoll said.
