Mariner varsity girls basketball coach Randy Shepard gives a high five to Rylee Eaton during a team huddle at a recent home game. By Jack Scott
Deer Isle—The girls basketball team has been idle for over a week. We are still undefeated at 12-0 and are currently in third place. Even by winning the rest of our games, we most likely will not get into first place, and I can’t see us moving any lower than third at the worst. This year we have a weak schedule which is why we will most likely end up in second. Once we get to Bangor, it doesn’t matter which position we are in; we have to play well to make it to the end, and we won’t play the top seed (assuming we win) until the finals.
The boys basketball team is 2-9 and has slipped to 8th place, though the number 6 through 8 teams are separated by less than 0.5 Heal Points. Because the Heal Points are calculated every day, it makes it a very fluid position when things are so close. By not playing, we lose ground when any of the other teams get a win. We have three big games this week, Greenville, Machias, and Bangor Christian, that are games that will solidify our playoff position with a win. Any two wins will at least give us a preliminary playoff game at home.
Once again, I am making my volunteer work trip to Monkey River, Belize, and I will miss the rest of the games for the regular season. The good news is that I will be back in time for any post season games. I expect both teams to have post season games, and in the post season, everyone is starting over, so anything can happen.
