Blue Hill—With only three meets held so far, the George Stevens Academy swim team heads into an end of season with days between meets rather than weeks.
After competing at John Bapst December 15 and Foxcroft Academy December 20, the team’s next meet was at Washington Academy January 10. The team then traveled to Mount Desert Island January 16 and will compete in Orono on January 18. Snow postponed the season’s first meet in Ellsworth and, in general, the weather has played its own role in the team’s season, as has a closed practice pool.
“We did have a serious setback on our training schedule, with the Maine Maritime Academy pool being closed for two weeks due to construction and several snow days,” Coach Don Driscoll said.
But the team is now back in “the flow of practice and meets,” he added.
Senior Ava Sealander, the 2017 Penobscot Valley Conference Swimmer of the Year, is undefeated in her events, the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly. Seniors Ellie Gellerson and Elana Bakeman are also standouts, while juniors Jeremiah Scheff and Alex Yap and freshmen Henry Scheff and Frank Sealander are all having “an outstanding season,” Driscoll said.
The Eagles compete at home, at the Ellsworth Downeast YMCA, on Friday, January 26, at 7 p.m.
