Ellsworth—The George Stevens Academy girls varsity basketball team suffered a tough loss against Ellsworth on January 2 when they were outscored 20-9 in the fourth quarter for a 50-41 final score.
Up to that point, the score had swung back and forth, with the teams tied 11-11 at the end of the first, and GSA in a narrow 32-30 lead heading into the final quarter.
Morgan Dauk led GSA with a game-high 24 points, including going 12 for 14 from the foul line. Mazie Smallidge scored six, Hanna Gutow chipped in five, including a three-pointer, and Maeghan Tobey also scored a three-pointer.
The loss dropped GSA to 6-3 for the season, and ninth place in the standings, with the season precisely one half over.
The game may have been a loss, but the close battle against the third-ranked Class B team, which has only dropped one game so far this season, shows that GSA is gaining strength as the season progresses. Early losses against Calais and Piscataquis, teams that are a few spots ahead in the Heal Point Standings, could be balanced by wins when the Eagles face those teams again in the next two weeks—Piscataquis is a home game on Saturday, January 9, at 7 p.m.
