The Eagles fell 1-4 to Waynflete Academy at the Class C state championships in Lewiston on Saturday after facing a familiar foe across the net, Waynflete Academy. The George Stevens Academy team has fallen to the South Portland school for the past five years, usually without winning a match—2011 was the exception.
But this year, first doubles team and PVC champions Tim Dentino and Matt Stephens battled back after a 6-0 first set rout to win the second set 7-5 . They clinched the match in a 10-6 tiebreaker. The scores from the remaining matches netted the usual results against Waynflete. First singles Tate Yoder falling 6-1, 6-0, second singles Nate Boechat losing 6-2, 6-3, third singles Luke Theoharidis unable to win a game at 6-0, 6-0 and second doubles team Ben Politte and David Reinke falling 6-1, 6-1.
The boys retain their Eastern Class C title for the sixth straight year.
