Senior Mason Oliver slaps the tipoff against Bucksport January 15. By Anne Berleant

Deer Isle—The boys basketball team lost to Bangor Christian 52-48 on January 10. This was a close game all the way and we couldn’t pull ahead. We had to foul near the end of the game and Bangor Christian made their foul shots to maintain their lead. Mason Oliver led us with 21 points and Myles Brown had 17.

The boys followed that with a big win over Sumner 55-43 on January 12. We started out well, leading 16-5, but turnovers gave Sumner more chances and they closed the gap to 16-14 after one. The play was pretty even until the third quarter when we opened it up with several steals and a couple of 3-pointers and led 49-32 after three quarters. We held on for the win and kept a good margin. Mason Oliver led us with 20 points, Myles Brown 16 including four 3-pointers, and Tobey Snow 10.

On January 15, the boys lost to Bucksport 66-44. This was very similar to the first game we played with them as we trailed 39-21 at the half. In the second half, Bucksport played many of their subs and we did as well. Mason Oliver led us with 14 points, Nathan Winchester 7, Nathan Thompson 5, and several players with 4.

The boys are 2-9 and are in fifth place with the win over Sumner. We don’t play for over a week and then we have important games with Greenville, Machias, and Bangor Christian. How we play in those games will determine how solid our playoff position will be.
