Kaylee Morey works to stifle Sumner. By Tracie Morey

Deer Isle—The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners basketball team beat Jonesport 41-30 on January 2. Both teams had a cold first half (like the weather) and we led 12-11 at the half. We woke up in the third quarter and stretched our lead to 8 points. Our defense kept us ahead and we rebounded well in this game. Orly Vaughn led us with 12 points, Kaylee Morey and Lily Gray each had 9, and Taylor Hardy 7.

The girls then gutted out a win over Sumner 43-34 on January 8. We led 24-12 at the half but took the third quarter off, and actually trailed by 2 as Sumner got hot. We finally played some defense on their hot player and put in a few baskets to build back a lead of 6 points. We got a couple of turnovers and boosted the lead to double digits to preserve the win. Kaylee Morey led us with 17 points, Lily Gray 9, and Rylee Eaton and Taylor Hardy each with 7.

The girls remain undefeated at 9-0 and are still at the top of the Class D standings. We are playing well, especially on defense and that has helped us win games where the offense is not playing smoothly. We had a couple games early in the season where we seemed to play to our potential, but lately our offense has not been consistent. We have a tough stretch of five games that began with the game against Sumner and ends on Monday at Bucksport. Tip-off is 5 p.m.
