Deer Isle—The boys basketball team lost a close game December 19 to Searsport 54-45. Unlike the previous games, this was close from beginning to end. We traded the lead back and forth with some hot shooting, but trailed 31-27 at the half. Midway through the third quarter, we led 36-35, but Searsport went on an 8-2 run to lead 44-38 after three.
We lost our patience, made many poor shot choices while Searsport was patient. In the fourth quarter, they ran the weave (ala Bob Cimbollek, for all you old timers) and wore down the clock. With 3 minutes to go, Stephen Cochrane made two big steals to bring us within 4 points. We had to foul and Searsport went 6 for 8 at the line to preserve their victory. Myles Brown led us with 21 points including five 3-pointers, Nathan Thompson 7, and Nathan Winchester, Tyson Rice, and Ethan Bates Cole each with 4.
The boys next lost to Bucksport 64-43 on December 21. We were plagued by turnovers and cold shooting in the first half and trailed 30-13. We played better in the second half when Bucksport put a lot of their substitutes in. Myles Brown led us with 11 points, Tobey Snow 10, Nathan Thompson 6, and Ethan Bates Cole 5.
Two days after Christmas, the boys lost a close game to Greenville 38-32. Greenville built an early lead but we kept battling to keep it close. We made a great defensive effort in the loss. Tobey Snow led us with 10 points and 12 rebounds, Mason Oliver 8 points and 7 rebounds, and Nathan Thompson 8 points.
The boys then broke into the win column with a big victory over previously undefeated Jonesport 71-53 at home on December 29. We led the whole game, with Myles Brown scoring half of our 25 points in the first half. When Jonesport tried to smother him in the second half, Mason Oliver went on a tear with 15 points in the third quarter.
This was a big team effort overall with everyone contributing to control the game over Jonesport. Mason Oliver had 28 points and 11 rebounds, Myles Brown had 14 points and 5 assists, and Tobey Snow had 11 points and 6 rebounds.
The boys are 1-6 but have moved up to 8th place with the Jonesport win. The return of Mason Oliver has energized us and gives us a whole different dimension, both on offense and defense. We should be able to pick up more wins and solidify our playoff position.
