Deer Isle—The girls basketball team combines the core of last year’s team that made the playoffs with several talented freshmen. Coach Randy Shepard feels we are going from a limited outside shooting team to a team with several long-range threats. He feels this year’s team will have a different style than last year and is encouraged by their play.
Orly Vaughn is the only senior and has played for three years already. Lily Gray, Sadie Rice, and Kaley Eaton are returning juniors with lots of experience.
Sophomores Brienna Limeburner and Katie Hutchinson played major minutes last year and are joined by Brittany Gray, Ella Marshall, and Deja Benner.
The freshmen include Rylee Eaton, Kaylee Morey, Peyton Rice, Makayla Lebel, and Taylor Hardy. They are working well with the upperclassmen and have played together with many of them in junior high.
We played well against a strong Narraguagus team in two scrimmage games. Coach Shepard feels the team is working well together as he is getting everyone on the same page with his offensive and defensive strategies. He feels we have a good attitude and also practice hard.
What showed in the scrimmage games is that we play with a lot of hustle and were not intimidated by a good Narraguagus team. I really think this team will pull together as they get used to playing as a unit and definitely be in Bangor come February.
