Deer Isle—Brendan Penfold continued his string of first place finishes by winning the Class C North regional cross-country championship race in Belfast with a time of 16:40.70, three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. This was one of the closer races for Brendan as he gets ready for the state race in Cumberland this weekend. Last year, he came in second in the regional at Belfast with a time of 16:56 but had a rough race on the same course in the state championship, running 17:46 after straining his hip before the race, placing 18th in Class C.

Penfold ran his fastest time on the Belfast course at the Festival of Champions, September 30, at 16:26.19.

The top 25 runners at the state championships from all classes will qualify for the New England race, and this has been Penfold’s goal all season, he said. He will have more competition from southern Maine, but he should be up to the task this year.
