Deer Isle—The boys soccer team lost to an inspired Jonesport team 2-1 September 13. We were out hustled overall in this game and Coach Joe Stinson felt we may have underestimated Jonesport as they out shot us about 17-5. Our lone goal was on an indirect kick by Stephen Cochrane that was put home by Trey Plummer.
Coach Stinson did mention the strong play of Mason Oliver and Trey Plummer that helped us stay close. As a team, we can’t afford to let other teams out hustle us to the ball.
The boys then lost on September 16 to Searsport 3-0. We gave up a quick goal due to a defensive mix-up in front of goalie Nathan Winchester. After that we held our own for the first half. Myles Brown took over at goalie and made several grade A saves. We had a scary moment when he was upended by a Searsport forward kicking the ball into the goal.
Coach Stinson said it really was a clean play but because of his pain, Myles was boarded up and taken to the hospital as a precaution. The good news is that he was released fairly quickly and returned on his own to the sidelines. The Searsport players and coach showed genuine concern and there really was no bad intent at all.
This game was a teachable moment as we passed pretty well but we saw Searsport be much more patient in their passing, especially around the goal. By rushing our passes, we didn’t get the opportunities or quality shots that Searsport did.
The boys are 0-2-2 before the Bangor-Christian game scheduled for September 19. We are playing well but we need to be patient around the goal so we can score more goals. This would also take the pressure off the defense. With four tough games in a week, we will be challenged to put forth a strong effort in each game. If we can rise to the occasion, we will do well moving ahead.
