Deer Isle—The Deer Isle-Stonington boys soccer team ended up in a 3-3 tie with Sumner on September 11 in a wild finish. We scored first when Stephen Cochrane drove a hard kick in for a goal about half way into the period on an assist from Ethan Bates Cole. Sumner managed the equalizer about 10 minutes later off a corner kick and pressured the goal towards the end of the half.

Sumner scored the first two goals in the second half, one on a penalty kick, to take a 3-1 lead. We pressed near the end, and with 7 minutes left, Kinsey Bartlett scored off a direct kick by Stephen Cochrane. Then with just over a minute left, Sam Knowlton scored off an assist from Ethan Bates Cole to tie it up. What a wild comeback with our backs to the wall.

We had more energy in the overtime periods but couldn’t convert. Coach Joe Stinson mentioned the play of Trey Plummer with great place kicks and Nathan Thompson with great play. A good soccer team needs many unsung heroes to be successful. We fought our way back into the game when Sumner felt they had us beaten.

The boys at 0-0-2 are playing well together. We go on the road for four games and should do well if we keep up the teamwork we have shown in our first two games. It was great to see the girls team supporting the boys so enthusiastically at the Sumner game. It makes for good spirit all around.
