ELLSWORTH—Deer Isle-Stonington senior Brendan Penfold kicked off the cross-country season at the Ellsworth Invitational on September 2 with a first-place finish on the three-mile course, posting a time of 16:40, while George Stevens Academy senior Eliza Broughton won on the girls’ side at 20:02.77, a six-second margin over fellow senior Mary Richardson.
The GSA Eagle girls, Class C state titlists in 2016, were edged into second place by the narrowest of margins by Class B Caribou in the 10-school meet, posting a 1:50:02.26 total time compared to Caribou’s 1:49:43.66 and a five-point difference in team score.
The Eagle boys placed ninth, with sophomore Caden Mattson placing the team high at 35th, running a 20:001.17 race. Penfold is the only DI-S Mariner competing on the varsity level, so accumulates no team points.
The next scheduled meet is on Saturday, September 9, at Bucksport, with an 11 a.m. start time.
