Parsing Mariners’ eighth inning playoff loss Scott's Sports Spot

The boys baseball team lost a heart breaker to #7 Southern Aroostook 9-8 in eight innings. We played well enough to win but one bad inning came back to haunt us. Mason Oliver pitched the whole game and did a great job with only a few walks with a few strikeouts.

We started off well, leading 4-0 after 2 innings. It all went south in the bottom of the third inning where a couple of walks, a few errors, and a few hits on top of some mental errors gave Southern Aroostook 6 runs to take the lead. We came back with 4 runs in the fourth to regain the lead 8-6, but Southern Aroostook got 2 more in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up.

Unfortunately, our bats went quiet in the last few innings and we couldn’t capitalize to get the winning run. In the bottom of the eighth, Southern Aroostook got on an error, stole second, advanced on another error, and then got home on a clean single.

Ethan Shepard had 2 hits with 3 RBIs, Mason Oliver and Tobey Snow each had 2 hits with 2 RBIs, Steven Cochrane 2 singles, Colby Haskell a single with an RBI, and Robby Turner a single. We just couldn’t get the timely hit in the later innings to get a win.

Southern Aroostook is a team very similar to us in the way they played. We were evenly matched but one thing I heard from a couple sources was what good sportsmanship was shown by the team and crowd at Southern Aroostook. That is so encouraging to hear, especially at playoff level baseball.
