Mariner girls join boys in tennis playoffs Boys team falls to Orono

Deer Isle—The girls tennis team won their last three games to sneak into the playoff picture. We beat Sumner on May 24, 4-0. In the singles, Jordyn Judkins won 8-1, Marissa Judkins won 8-4, Emma Plummer won 8-3, and Sumner forfeited the doubles.

The clincher for us was a 3-2 win over Schenck on May 25, where Jordyn Judkins won 8-0, Marissa Judkins won 8-5, and Orly Vaughan won 8-3. In the doubles, Addie McDonald/Emma Plummer lost 8-5, and we forfeited the second doubles.

The teamplayed its preliminary playoff game on May 31 to George Stevens (9-3). The results were not available by press time.

The boys tennis team tied Sumner 2-2 in a close match. In the singles, Devron Emrick lost 6-5 when he had to retire, Cullen Cochrane lost a close match 9-8, (7-3), and Ben Penfold won 8-2. In the doubles, Ian Cust/Ennis Marshall won 8-1 and the second doubles was a double forfeit.

The boys lost to Schenck 3-1. In the singles, Cullen Cochrane lost 8-2, Ben Penfold lost 8-0, and Mason Plummer lost 8-0. Ian Cust/Ennis Marshall won 8-1 and the second doubles was a double forfeit.

In the preliminary playoff game, the Mariners lost to Orono 5-0.

Both teams have suffered from injuries and small numbers but were able to clear the hurdle of making the playoffs. The girls were helped by the consistently good play of Jordyn Judkins at first singles. Next year someone will have to step up to her position. The boys have several young players who have improved through the season and will help next year.
