Deer Isle—The Deer Isle-Stonington girls softball team lost to Sumner 18-6 on May 17. Brittany Gray pitched at the start with Deja Benner finishing out. We hit well but couldn’t keep Sumner from scoring. Lily Gray and Abby Stinson each had two singles, Katie Hutchinson and Brienna Limeburner each had a double, and Kristin Thompson had a single.

The girls played Sumner again the next day and beat them 13-12. We controlled this game in the first six innings and were up 13-6 going into the seventh. With two outs, we let our nerves get the best of us and committed several errors, allowing Sumner to score six runs. We were finally able to get the final out and preserve the win.

Despite our shaky finish, it was a great game and we still got the win. Deja Benner started as pitcher and Lily Gray finished up, recording three strikeouts. Katie Hutchinson had a double and a single, Abby Stinson and Madison Frazier each had two singles, Brienna Limeburner had a triple, and Brittany Gray had a single.

In a doubleheader against Greenville on May 20, the girls ran into a hot pitcher and lost 25-0 and 25-1. We haven’t seen a real elite pitcher yet and we were bowled over. In the first game, Brienna Limeburner got our only hit. In the second game, Brienna got on base by way of an error and stole her way around the bases to score. Greenville is a strong team and took us to the whooping post.

The girls then lost to Schenck 16-2 on May 22. We got down early, committing some uncharacteristic errors, though catcher Abby Stinson and shortstop Brienna Limeburner executed a brilliant cutoff throw to second to nab the runner on third trying to steal home. Lily Gray pitched with five strikeouts. Kristin Thompson had a double and a single, Sadie Rice two singles, and Brienna Limeburner, Brittany Gray, and Amy Friedell each had a single.

The girls are 3-8 and still struggle for consistency. I feel we may be too tight and putting too many expectations on ourselves. We have the talent and should just go out and enjoy the game. We are going to make mistakes, but that is part of building for success. We just need to believe in ourselves and see what the fans see. Good things will happen.

Despite our shaky finish, it was a great game and we still got the win.
