Mariner baseball team leads, then loses season opener

Deer Isle—The boys baseball team lost a ragged game to open their season to Bangor Christian 12-9 on April 24. It was a back and forth game where we played well at times. We led 7-4 when we gave up too many walks, and errors  quickly put us down 12-8. We settled down and had our chances, but couldn’t get the runs we needed. We had the tying run at the plate at the end, so we were still in the game.

Overall, we did hit the ball well for early in the season. Ethan Shepard had a home run and 2 singles, Nathan Winchester had 2 doubles and a single, and Silas Bates and Tobey Snow each and a double and a single. Ethan Shepard, Silas Bates, and Mason Oliver did the pitching in platoon style.

In a way, this was our preseason game since the one we had scheduled was canceled due to weather. Bangor Christian had already played a regular game and had three or four preseason games as well. We did have many positives in this game, and we can certainly build from here. Pitching and defense are two areas we will need to strengthen to gain success.
