Deer Isle— The Mariners softball team beat Bangor Christian, 30-29, on April 24 in a marathon game won in dramatic fashion in the last inning. We led 5-3 after the first inning, but then we couldn’t find the plate with multiple pitchers, walking many batters to trail 19-8. We battled back to be tied 29-29 after 6 innings.

In the top of the seventh with the go-ahead run at first, Amy Friedell made a running catch in right field to save the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Friedell then scored the winning run, stealing home on a passed ball with two outs. What a way to start the season! We showed a lot of character for such a young team to battle back from 11 runs down.

Katie Hutchinson had a big day at the plate with a triple, 4 singles and 9 RBIs, Lily Gray had a double and 2 singles, Abby Stinson had 2 singles, and Brittany Gray, Kaley Eaton, and Amy Friedell each had a single.

Our biggest challenge will be to come up with consistent pitching so we don’t give up so many free rides. We hit the ball well and the defense will continue to improve. We will be a work in progress, but I think we have a very good upside that will develop as the season progresses.
