BANGOR—The George Stevens Academy girls basketball team pulled out a close 49-40 victory over the Calais Blue Devils in a Class C North quarterfinal match up February 22.
The Eagles went on a 6-0 run, with senior Morgan Dauk scoring all the points before Calais responded with its own run, taking a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter. George Stevens fought back and took a 17-9 lead going into the second quarter.
The second quarter was a back and forth battle, with Calais closing the gap to two at several points during the eight minutes of play. But the Eagles dug in and kept a 23-18 lead going into the half.
George Stevens kept its slight advantage through most of the third, but Calais continued to fight, tying the game up 32-32 with just under two minutes to go in the quarter. Morgan Dauk knocked down a jumper to regain the lead for GSA and held a 36-34 advantage entering the final quarter.
Dauk and the Eagles were too much for the Blue Devils in the fourth, climbing to a five-point lead before eventually pulling away for the win.
Dauk poured in 31 points to go along with 12 rebounds to lead all scorers in the game. Emma Crosby chipped in seven points for the Eagles, and Julianna Allen contributed four points.
George Stevens Academy will take on Piscataquis Community High School in a semifinal match up at 7:05 p.m. Friday, February 24.
