Deer Isle—The girls basketball team lost to George Stevens 52-27 on February 2. For whatever reason, we came out flat and did not play competitively against GSA. They are a strong Class C team at the top of their league, but we didn’t have the fire we have shown at times this year.
We handled their pressure pretty well, but couldn’t get comfortable in our half court set. After getting down by 20 or more early, we rallied to close it to 15, but we were in too big a hole to make a difference. Lily Gray led us with 10, Orly Vaughn and Katie Hutchinson each had 6, and Brienna Limeburner 4.
The girls end the regular season at 11-7 and in fourth place. The fifth-place team has a game to play, but either way, the only difference would be what color jersey we wear in the four-five matchup in Bangor. The challenge that Coach Randy Shepard has now is to keep the girls working hard and focused on fundamentals for the two weeks that they wait for a tournament game.
We don’t have a lot of depth and we are overall a young team. To win in Bangor, we must play smart and stay aggressive with our offense. We have a bad habit of being out of position for rebounds (i.e., not boxing out) and make foolish fouls trying to make up for it. I know Coach Shepard is looking for a scrimmage or two to keep the girls sharp leading up to the tournament. It is up to the players to stay in shape and work hard during this time.
