Deer Isle—The Mariner boys basketball team lost a one-sided game to Machias 65-29 on January 19. We played an inspired game when we saw them at home but that was not the case at Machias. They dominated us from the start and we never got any offensive flow going.

The boys then lost a rough game on January 23 to Bucksport 60-40. We really held our own in the first half despite their pressure. We trailed by 6 points before Bucksport dropped in a long 3 point shot at the buzzer to lead by 9 at the half.

We started the third quarter well and trailed 35-27 midway through the quarter until Bucksport started dropping in a couple threes and stretched their lead to 17 after three. We traded baskets after that but the deficit was too large.

Overall I thought we made a good effort. Bucksport made us rush shots at times and we didn’t settle down enough to get good looks. Times when we did, the shots wouldn’t drop. Ethan Bates Cole led us with 10 points, Mason Oliver and Silas Bates each had 9, and Dakota Gillen 6.

Without any wins this week, the boys are 4-11 and are clinging to 10th place, the last place to make the playoffs. We have two important games this week against Jonesport and Bangor Christian; both are ahead of us in the standings. We must win these games to cement our place in the playoffs. We need to have the inspired play we showed in the middle of the season for a chance to get a trip to Bangor.
