ELLSWORTH—The George Stevens Academy boys and girls swim teams notched wins over Washington Academy in a home meet on January 12 at the Ellsworth YMCA. The girls took a 73-60 win, while the boys won 68-12 in a dominating performance.
The GSA girls 200-yard medley relay team of Katie Forrest, Laura Liu, Ellie Gellerson and Elana Bakeman finished just four seconds shy of Washington Academy’s team for second in the event. It was the only relay the girls would lose on the evening, taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay (Gellerson, Liu, Emma Larson-Whittaker and Maya Pelletier) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (Larson-Whittaker, Bakeman, Pelletier and Forrest).
In the single events, Larson-Whittaker, Bakeman and Forrest took second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle, and Pelletier finished first in the 500-yard freestyle. Pelletier and Forrest had a one-two finish in the 100-yard backstroke, while Gellerson and Liu took second and third place, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke.
In boys action, the 200-yard medley relay team of Jeremiah Scheff, Jaichen Wang, Evan Soukup and Alex Yap was the only team to compete in the event, as was the team of Wang, Randy Yan, Yuxiao Zhang and Eric Cai in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Soukup, Scheff, Yap and Yan were the only competitors in the 400-yard freestyle relay as well.
In single races, Scheff, Yap and Yan finished in first, second and third, respectively, as the only swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle. Soukup came in second out of two racers in the 100-yard backstroke, and Wang competed as the only participant in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The team is back in action Friday, January 20, at John Bapst.
