Deer Isle—The boys earned a hard-fought victory against Bangor Christian 41-35 on January 5. BC plays a quick aggressive defense. We kept it close and led 22-19 at the half. We stretched our lead to 9 points after three quarters and looked like we were going to cruise home leading 38-28 with 3 minutes left.
Things started to unravel as BC converted 3 of our turnovers and we missed the front end of two one-and-one foul shots. What saved us was our strong rebounding from Mason Oliver, Ethan Shepard, and Ethan Bates Cole. Ethan Shepard iced the game with 2 foul shots with less than 10 seconds left. Mason Oliver led us with 18 points, Ethan Shepard 15, and Dakota Gillen 4.
Then, on Saturday, January 7, The boys lost a close game to Greenville 58-48. We were rattled by their press and trailed 14-5 after one quarter. Hot outside shooting from Ethan Bates Cole and getting the ball through the press got us back in the game, trailing 28-23 at the half. We had another energized quarter, capped with a half-court shot at the buzzer from Ethan Bates Cole to lead 39-37 after three.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t maintain our offensive momentum and Greenville prevailed in the last quarter, but this was a much better effort overall from our first game with them. Ethan Bates Cole had 17 points with five 3-pointers, Mason Oliver also had 17 points, and Dakota Gillen had 11.
The boys are 4-7, in 8th place, after a 54-46 win over Searsport on January 10, and are inside the playoff cutoff. There is a lot of basketball left, and we are playing with a lot more fire as well as much better chemistry as a team. If we keep up with this inspired play, we should be able to get the wins we need to get into the playoff picture.
