Deer Isle—The girls beat Bangor Christian 54-37 on January 5 in a game similar to last week’s victory over Highview Christian: After a slow start, we built the lead by the half, and more after that. We trailed 11-9 after the first quarter but the offense caught fire in the second quarter and we led 32-14 at the half. We got many turnovers and just shot better from the field.
We went on an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter to build our lead to 54-27 and Coach Shepard played the younger players to finish the game. Lily Gray led us with 19 points, Katie Hutchinson 15, Brienna Limeburner 12, and Orly Vaughan 8.
The girls survived the long ride to Greenville on January 7 to win that game 37-35. This time, we handled their press much better than before. It was a close game where we trailed 18-14 at the half and Greenville stretched their lead to 31-24 after three quarters.
We rallied to outscore Greenville 13-4, playing a strong fourth quarter, with Orly Vaughan scoring the basket that gave us the win. The bad news is that we went 0 for 8 from the foul line in the fourth which could have given us a nice cushion.
Lily Gray and Katie Hutchinson led us with 13 points each. Coach Shepard cited Orly Vaughan, Jesslyn Gove, Madison Frazier, and Brienna Limeburner with good defense and rebounding to keep us in the game.
After a 45-44 win over Searsport on January 10, the girls are 7-4 and are currently in third place. We are playing well together and our offense has been much improved. We have three important games this week that will give us good Heal points if we can win them.
Lily Gray was named the Roadrunner female athlete of the week for January 8 on the Eastern Maine Sports website (easternmainesports.com). I confess I never had been to that website, but it is good that people are paying attention to us. Congratulations Lily.
