Deer Isle— The girls basketball team beat Highview Christian 41-40 on December 20 in another game where we lost a big lead to make for end-of-game drama. We were up by 13 points near the end of the third quarter, but Highview closed it to 8 by the end of the quarter. We went back up 13 until halfway through the fourth quarter when Highview dropped in two 3-pointers and our offense stalled.
With a minute left, an Orly Vaughan basket put us up 41-35. Highview got two quick baskets to make the score 41-40. We lost the ball and Highview looked to score, but Orly Vaughan stole the ball to give us possession. Because Highview had committed only 2 fouls, when they fouled us, we kept possession and ran out the clock for the win. This was much closer than it should have been. Lily Gray led us with 16 points, Brienna Limeburner 13, Orly Vaughan 6, and Abby Stinson 4.
The girls then lost to Bucksport 65-26 on December 22. We got down early and couldn’t keep up with the speed and depth of Bucksport. We couldn’t get the offense going and Bucksport shot well. Lily Gray and Brienna Limeburner each had 7 points and Jesslyn Gove had 6.
The girls lost a frustrating game to Greenville 43-39 on December 27. This game we let Greenville steal from us. We were up by 14 points midway into the second quarter when Greenville went on a 25-3 run to lead 33-24 midway through the third quarter. Greenville’s press gave us fits and they were deadly on their transition layups.
To our credit, we clawed our way back and were tied on a Lily Gray 3-pointer 36-36 halfway through the fourth quarter. We had plenty of chances but only managed three foul shots from Brienna Limeburner. This should have been our game. Lily Gray led us with 15 points, Brienna Limeburner 12, and Orly Vaughan 6.
On January 2, the girls easily beat Machias 64-33. We led 37-10 at the half and Coach Randy Shepard played the younger players in the second half for valuable experience. Machias was vulnerable to our press and we created many turnovers. Lily Gray led us with 24 points, including six 3-pointers, Katie Hutchinson had 15, Brienna Limeburner 12, and Orly Vaughan 5, all from the foul line.
The girls scored another win against Highview Christian on January 3, 62-20.
The girls are 4-4 and in fifth place in the early (not significant yet) standings. If we can learn to beat the press consistently, we have the half-court offense to compete with most teams. If we can keep this level of play up, we should reach the playoffs in Bangor again this year.
