BLUE HILL—After adding a volleyball team to its list of varsity fall sports this year, George Stevens Academy has a new winter varsity sport, indoor track.

GSA’s cross country and outdoor spring track programs have seen success over recent years, including individual and team cross country state championships. That experience, coupled with dedicated runners, will help the indoor track program find similar success, according to head coach Tony Rolfe, who is also assistant spring track coach.

“We have some new kids, but I’d say two-thirds of them are veteran runners,” said Rolfe during practice December 20. “But it’s still an adjustment…Mostly all of them are new to indoor track.”

Runners have had to adjust to different events for indoor track; sprint competitions are not the same distance and events like javelin are not events. But, the program already has the numbers, with about 30 runners on the roster.

“Obviously you lose some kids to basketball and swimming but overall the numbers are great.”

Training has been a challenge; the team uses two hallways and the cafeteria. Weather permitting, the team runs outdoors. Once a week, the team travels to the University of Maine to train in its field house; however, most of those training sessions are shared with other teams in the Penobscot Valley Conference.

In their first meet, the girls team took first place and the boys second over six schools, including Ellsworth, Mount Desert Island and Hampden Academy.

Moving forward, Rolfe said he is most excited about the early success of his team, and is hopeful that will continue through the season.

“I’m really just looking forward to seeing how far we’re going to be able to go, and to see if we’re as competitive as we hope to be,” he said.
