Houlton—A corner pass from John Larson for a goal kicked in by Taylor Schildroth secured a 2-1 semifinal victory for George Stevens and a berth in the Northern Regional Championships for the Eagles varsity boys team.
With four minutes left in the second half, the Eagles were able to break through the Houlton defense to break the 1-1 tie that had carried over from the first half in the first match-up of the two teams this season.
“We scored early on, on a corner kick by Alex Taylor-Lash, and then [Houlton] scored immediately afterwards,” Coach Mark Ensworth said. “They’re a good physical team so it took us a little time to get used to that.”
The Eagles will face the reigning Class C state champion Washington Academy Raiders in the northern regional championship game.
The #3 Raiders are undefeated this year (16-0), winning twice (7-0, 5-3) against George Stevens, for five straight wins over the Eagles in two years, including a 6-0 crushing in the 2015 playoff semifinals.
“We have our work cut out for us,” Ensworth said. “At this point, both teams know what each other can do. It’s a matter of who executes.”
After playoff wins in the prelims, quarterfinals and semifinals, ninth-ranked George Stevens is 11-6 for the season.
