Eagles cross country lands one-two finish at Searsport

Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy boys team took first place, and the girls second, at a varsity cross country meet on September 16 in Searsport.

The boys won by three points over Mount Desert Island after shutting out the top scoring spots, while the girls were edged out by one point by the MDI runners.

The top five finishers’ scores count towards the team’s score, and the Eagle boys topped MDI in their first four spots, with John Hassett taking first, Ollie Dillon second, Max Mattson taking seventh, freshman Caden Mattson ninth and Tyler Varnum 15th.

Deer Isle-Stonington’s Brendan Penfold, who placed second, was the only runner in the top 15 not competing for a team finish. Of the field of 57 from eight schools, 34 runners competed for team points.

The Eagles race at Sumner this Friday, September 23, as they gear up for the Festival of Champions at Belfast on Saturday, October 1.

Eliza Broughton finished second in the girls race, with Mary Richardson third, Zeya Lorio fourth, Mary Brenna Catus sixth and Susanna Jakub 17th, out of a field of 40, with 24 competing on a team level.
