Deer Isle—The boys soccer team lost to Sumner 6-3 on September 13, despite scoring first on a goal by Rodrigo Cespedes. Sumner scored three times to lead 3-1 at the half. We scored first in the second half to close the gap to 3-2, but with less than 20 minutes left in the half, Sumner scored 2 quick goals to put it out of reach. Each team scored once more to make it 6-3.

Rodrigo Cespedes scored 2 goals, one unassisted and one assisted by Cullen Cochrane, and Colby Haskell scored unassisted. Nathan Winchester was in goal and made 10 saves on 16 shots. There was plenty of back and forth action in this game. Unfortunately, there was more back than forth for us. We had a couple defensive breakdowns that ended up hurting us.

The boys lost to Greenville 7-0 on September 17. Though Greenville controlled the ball much more than we did, we managed several runs at their goal but could not connect on any shots. Mason Plummer was in goal for the first half and Nathan Winchester the second half. They each made about 10 saves beyond the goals scored under a lot of pressure.

The boys have yet to win as we have faced some tough competition so far. We have had signs of good passing and offense but not consistently enough to win. The more offense we have, the less the defense has to work and that helps. The defense needs to tighten up and not allow as many hard shots that are almost impossible for the goalie to stop. This team has the talent to win games and should do so approaching mid-season.
