ORONO—The George Stevens Academy girls tennis team lost a hard-fought 1-4 contest to Mattanawcook Academy in the Class C North girls tennis regional championship Tuesday, June 7 at the University of Maine.

Both doubles teams dropped their match to Mattanawcook Academy, as Hunter Morris and Tatianna Haggestad lost 6-3, 6-0 to Abby Morrison and Paige Hasseltine, and Grace Hylan and Julianna Allen lost to Sydney Morrison and Katey Libby in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Singles action was highlighted by a three-set contest between George Steven’s Abby Frost and Mattanawcook Academy’s Ava Broderick. After dropping the first set 2-6, Frost battled back in the second set, winning a 10-8 tiebreak to win the set 7-5 and force a third, which she won 6-3 as the only female winner on the day for George Stevens. Lindsay Nevin dropped her match to Natalie Tilton after winning the first set 6-2 before Tilton came back to win the second and third sets 6-3, 6-4. First singles competitor Erin Niehoff lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

George Stevens Academy beat out Orono in the quarterfinals and Penobscot Valley in the semifinals to make it to the regional finals.
