Blue Hill—The Eagle girls track team scored a second-place victory at the May 28 Penobscot Valley Conference championships, scoring 79.5 points, a far stretch behind winner Orono’s 237, who swept nearly every event.
One exception was the javelin throw, where Morgan Dauk, the 2015 event winner, threw 112 feet, 9 inches to take first place.
John Hassett brought home two first-place medals in the 800 and 1600 meter events, as the boys team finished fourth, with 60 points behind winner Orono, followed by Caribou and Washington Academy.
The girls competed solid in the relays, hurdles and 3200 meter run to earn points, with Mary Richardson placing second and Eliza Broughton fourth in the 3200, and Broughton and Bella Cimeno racing to a 2, 3 finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Zeya Lorio, Hanna Gutow, Broughton and Richardson ran to a second-place finish in the 800 meter relay, while in the 400 meter relay, Mazie Smallidge, Lorio, Cimeno and Dauk also scored a second place.
For the boys team, Alexey Prokopov finished third in the shot-put event, while Ollie Dillon grabbed the fifth-place finish in the 1600 meter run, and Alex Taylor-Lash and Sam Scheff finished fourth and fifth in the 300 meter hurdles.
The 400 meter relay team of Hassett, Dillon, Cameron Gordon and Walker Ellsworth finished just over 2 seconds behind Orono for second place.
The Eagles will send their top field and track performers to the state championship on Saturday, June 4, at Foxcroft Academy.
