Deer Isle—The girls tennis team lost to George Stevens 4-1 on May 18. We played several close matches and won one, a big improvement. In the singles, Jordyn Judkins lost 8-5 to Erin Niehoff, Justine Rhys lost 8-3 to Lindsay Nevins, and Jess Trainor lost 8-2 to Tatiana Heggestaad. In the doubles, Veronica Pezaris/Nicole Nolan lost 8-3 to Hunter Morris/Jenna Gray and Orly Vaughan/Ali Eaton won 8-4 over Julianna Allen/Lillie Mier.
The girls beat Sumner 5-0 on May 23, where 2 matches were won by forfeit. Jordyn Judkins and Justine Rhys won their singles matches and Veronica Pezaris/Nicole Nolan won their doubles match.
The girls are 5-7 and have done well ever since we have been able to field a full team. We are in position to have a preliminary playoff game despite our 0-6 start. If we can ride this resurgence into the playoffs, we can possibly pull off an upset.
Boys team in third place
The boys tennis team lost to George Stevens 4-1 on May 18, again playing several close matches and winning one as well. In the singles, Cameron Wendell lost 8-6 to Matt Stephens, Devon Emrick lost 8-5 to Beowulf Urban, and Brantley Emrick lost 8-0 to Ben Politte. In the doubles, Marvin Merritt/Justin Eaton won 8-4 over Aidan Byrne/Leif Lyon-Miller and Desmond Billings/Ennis Marshall lost 8-0 to Kent Fang/Christian Jones.
The boys beat Sumner 5-0 on May 23 where one of the matches was forfeited. Cameron Wendell, Devon Emrick, and Brantley Emrick won their singles matches and Marvin Merritt/Justin Eaton won their doubles match.
The boys are 9-3 and in third place in Class C. We will have a home playoff game. We have done well this season, losing only twice to powerhouse George Stevens and a close loss to Orono. This year, if we do win our preliminary game, we don’t face George Stevens in the next game.
