Mariner girls fall to Machias in opener Scott's Sport Spot

Deer Isle—The girls softball team lost to Machias 6-1 on April 27. I felt we played a good game for our first game this season and having such a young team. Considering that only two or three of these girls saw any major time in the field last year, it will be a big step up for most of our players. Machias had a good pitcher with decent speed and good control, and we managed only two hits. Jess Gove had a single and Amy Friedell got on with a bunt and made it around the bases on aggressive base running.

Natalie Knowlton pitched a good game, giving up only two hits with nine strikeouts and seven walks. We did decent in the field with four errors, but some of them were costly ones. We will get better and this was a good start. I expect us to need a few games under our belt to start showing our potential.
