EASTPORT—The Deer Isle-Stonington varsity boys basketball team lost a preliminary playoff on February 10, falling 51-41 to #7 Shead at Eastport. A close first quarter saw the Mariners down by one point at 9-8 but couldn’t stay even, as Shead jumped to an 11 point lead by half time, and a 39-26 going into the fourth quarter.

Mason Oliver lead the Mariners with a game-high 16 points, with Noah Davis scoring 11, while Krisford Melanio had six, Dakota Gillen four and Paul Zoephal chipped in two.

The team ends their season at 4-15, and ranked 10th, but their win-loss record doesn’t reflect close games to higher ranked teams in January. The Mariners fell to Class C #9 Sumner and to #5 Bangor Christian by three points, and to #4 Greenville by seven, in January games.

The Mariners had split regular season games against Shead, with an early 45-44 win followed by a 61-49 loss late in the season.

The #6 Lady Mariners will face third-ranked Shead, after earning a bye in the prelim round,  in a quarterfinal matchup at the Cross Center on February 13. Tip off is 7:35 p.m.

Like the boys, the girls split games with Shead this season, but came out on top at their last meeting, 45-39, despite a gap in win-loss records: 8-10 for the Mariners and 12-6 for Shead.
