Deer Isle—After a mixed Class C and D competition at the Penobscot Valley Conference cheering event on January 18 in Millinocket, Coach Kim Yurchick is readying her team for the Class D Northern Regional Competition this Saturday, January 23, at 11:45 a.m. at the Cross Center in Bangor.

While Yurchick felt having to compete alongside more than 14 Class C teams was not in her team’s best interest, “the girls nailed their routine,” she said. “I was so proud of them.”

The experience of competing at the PVCs will help the team perform better at the regionals, Yurchick continued, as will the judges’ comments.

The squad has been practicing two hours, six days a week, and gives a preview of their choreographed routines at Mariner home games.

Last year, the Mariners’ performance at the regionals qualified the squad for the state competition in Augusta, where they placed fifth among Class D teams.

This year, the regional competition, on January 23, and state competition, on February 6, will be held at the Cross Center.
