Deer Isle—The girls basketball team beat a feisty Bangor Christian team on January 13, 56-41. For the first quarter and a half, BC seemed like they couldn’t miss and led us 26-19. In the last three minutes of the half, we came to life and went on a 9-2 run to be tied 28 apiece at the half.
We poured it on in the third quarter and BC shooting cooled off. Ashley Haskell punctuated our run with a three-pointer at the buzzer and we took a commanding 48-34 lead, which we carried through the fourth quarter. Ally Eaton led us with 25, Natalie Knowlton and Lily Gray each with 9, Orly Vaughan 8, and Ashley Haskell 5.
The girls lost a frustrating game to Bucksport 45-31, on January 18. We led 9-8 after one quarter and trailed 22-18 at the half. We just couldn’t get our offense working and committed turnovers that cost us. If we had played with the focus and attitude we had against Bangor Christian, this would have easily been our game.
We trailed 40-26 in the fourth quarter and rallied back to 40-31 before Ally Eaton fouled out. We didn’t score around her like we did against Bangor Christian. Bucksport stretched their lead to 44-31 and with 2 minutes left, Coach Randy Shepard put in the younger girls for some floor time. Ally Eaton led us with 20 points, Orly Vaughan 4, and Lily Gray 3.
The girls are 4-8 and still only one place from making the playoffs. A win over a team like Bucksport would vault us up to a potential home playoff game. We need to play with more focus and energy as we have a very busy schedule in the next week. How well we play in this span will make or break us. Once again we need to score around Ally Eaton to make the offense more effective. We can get there but we have to make the effort.
