Castine—A resurgent men’s basketball team and a strong women’s team will take the court at Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday, January 9, against Husson University.
The Mariners will also host Community Day for the second year, inviting local high schools to fill the stands.
“Last year, we ran a game promotion with Adams School kids and it went really well. We had a really good turnout, so we are extending the invitation to a larger audience this year,” MMA Athletic Coordinator Riana Sidelinger said.
The half-time show is still being arranged but will highlight some very young and local talent on the court, according to Sidelinger.
Maine Maritime men’s team, coached by David Muchnick, is 2-2 in New England Conference games, and 3-7 overall. They last faced Husson on December 3, losing 93-78. Sophomore Brendan Newcomb, of Holden, is leading the Mariners in points with 19.9 per game average, with Tyler Thayer of Hermon close behind with 15.3 points per game.
The Mariner women, coached by Craig Dagan, are 5-4, with a 2-2 conference record, winning at John Jay on January 3, 61-49. They will have the chance to avenge a 72-60 loss to Husson in early December.
The women tip off at 1 p.m., and the men at 3 p.m.
