Deer Isle—The Mariner cheerleaders are back in action, seeking a return to the Augusta Civic Center for the state championships. And they have more than doubled their squad, to nine members.
“They are looking fantastic,” Coach Kim Yurchick recently said.
Three girls have returned, Ali Eaton, Shaylee Bray and Riley Getto, and the remaining “are all new girls. Some have cheered in previous years and decided to come back and try it out again,” Yurchick said.
Amy Friedell, Ashley Nevells, Aja Quintal, Sonya Shepard, Delaney Billings and Krista Billings fill out the squad.
The team is already working on its competition routines, Yurchick said, having learned 40 sideline cheers.
“I’m very impressed with how well they are learning material,” she said. “We are ahead of the game.”
The team works hard, putting in two-hour practices six days a week, plus cheering at the Mariner home games.
The competition routines are more difficult this year, Yurchick said, as the team attempts to “move up” in competition points.
Last year, their five-member squad placed fifth at the state championships, after securing a spot by an eighth place finish at the regional competition.
Yurchick has high hopes for 2016.
“I really have a good feeling about this year. The girls, they’re new, but you wouldn’t know it.”
