CASTINE—The Maine Maritime Academy men’s and women’s basketball teams are scheduled for a road trip doubleheader against Husson University on Saturday, December 5.
Both teams were in action Tuesday, December 1, against Thomas College.
Brendan Newcomb (Holden) scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Maine Maritime Academy men’s basketball team to a 74-64 win over the Terriers Tuesday evening.
The win marks the Mariners’ first victory over the Terriers since January 29, 2011.
The Mariners jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the early minutes of the first period and held on despite a Thomas College run that tied the game at 10-10 with 13 minutes left in the first. The Mariners went on a 7-0 run and took a 35-25 lead into halftime.
The Mariners took a 59-46 lead six minutes into the second half and held on for the win.
Newcomb added four rebounds and two assists for the Mariners, while Tyler Thayer chipped in with 12 points and three rebounds.
Maine Maritime improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the NAC, while the Terriers fall to 2-4 on the season, and 0-1 in conference play.
In women’s basketball action, the Lady Mariners cruised to a 70-51 win over Thomas College.
Maine Maritime battled back from a 10-14 first-period deficit to take a 35-24 lead at the half.
The Lady Mariners went on a 10-2 run to open the fourth period en route to the victory.
Kristi Willey scored 17 points to go along with six rebounds, six steals and two assists to lead Maine Maritime. Alayne Felix and Megan McLean each added 13 points on the game.
With the win, the Mariners improve to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in NAC play, while the Terriers fall to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
