Blue Hill—The George Stevens Academy varsity girls basketball team returns as host for a Toys for Tots game Friday night, while facing off against the Deer Isle-Stonington Lady Mariners in the season opener for both teams.
The game begins at 7 p.m. at GSA, where toys, or money to buy toys, can be donated for the Toys for Tots program, run by the United States Marine Corps.
On the court, the Eagles struggled in two scrimmage losses, against John Bapst (50-39) and Orono (41-21), on November 28.
Coach Bill Case acknowledged after the games that the Eagles had some work ahead of them.
The experience of seasoned players should help the team in the weeks ahead.
Seven of the 13 team members are seniors, including starters Hanna Gutow and Alyssa Chesney. Seniors Allyson Snow, Cora Gray, Margaret Brooks, Megan Gale and Meaghan Tobey all bring experience to the court and bench. Junior Megan Dauk returns as a powerhouse on defense and offense, and freshman Julianna Allen showed grit and determination on the court against Orono.
Sophomores Maizie Smallidge and Emma Crosby have returned to the varsity roster. Juniors Hannah Peasley and Sarah Mullen round out the team.
