MMA women claim third seed in NAC tournament

Castine—The Maine Maritime Academy Mariners clinched the #3 seed in the upcoming North Atlantic Conference Championship after a 4-0 win against Thomas College followed by a 2-0 loss to Castleton.

Tori Cooper of Saco scored twice to lead the MMA women’s soccer team to a 4-0 win at Ritchie Field on October 20 against Thomas. Cooper broke open the scoring in the fifth minute with a booming free kick that curved into the net, then added an insurance goal in the 61st minute on a penalty kick, her sixth goal on the season.

The Mariners dominated possession of the ball, and controlled the tempo for most of the game, tallying 26 shots to the Terriers’ 4.

Maine Maritime’s leading goal scorer and reigning NAC Rookie of the Week, Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) found the back of the net on a ball played up by teammate Morgan Libby (Brunswick). Susana DeFrank (Temecula, Calif.) also added a score when she bounced a ball off her defender and laid out to sneak the ball past Terrier keeper Paige Leary.

The Mariners followed up with a loss to Castleton 2-0, on October 25, in a game that marked the end of regular season play.

Maggie McConkey (Fryeburg) recorded two stops in net, while Spartan keeper Jessica Binkowski tallied nine saves in the win.

Cooper led the way for Maine Maritime’s offense with five shots, four on net.

The Mariners end the regular season 9-7-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the NAC.

Maine Maritime will host Husson University on Saturday, October 31, for an NAC quarterfinal matchup.
