BELFAST—Running a 16:20.01 three-mile race in Belfast, George Stevens Academy junior John Hassett swept the Class C Northern Regional championship in cross country on Saturday, October 24. Across 277 runners in Class A, B and C, he placed fifth, ahead of the state championships next Saturday in Cumberland
Area high school runners nabbed five of the top ten Class C spots, with Ollie Dillon, Will Entwisle and Aylen Wolf of GSA placing fourth, seventh and 10th, and Brendan Penfold of Deer Isle-Stonington racing to the eighth spot.
Both the GSA boys and girls teams placed second behind Orono, in a repeat of the Penobscot Valley Conference Invitational last weekend, qualifying for the state championships. Deer Isle-Stonington does not compete as a team, but Penfold and Oscar Mattes race as individuals. As the top runners of DISHS, both qualify to compete at the state championships.
Fourth-place winner Eliza Broughton was the top GSA inisher on the girls team, followed closely by Zeya Lorio in fifth, another repeat from the PVCs. Broughton crossed the line in 19:51.30, Lorio in 20:09.13 and ninth place winner Mary Richardson ran a 20:23.65 race.
