CASTINE—A penalty kick goal with 1:45 remaining in the second overtime period lifted Husson University over Maine Maritime Academy 2-1, in an October 12 night game on Ritchie Field.
Despite controlling the ball for the majority of the second half, it took the Mariners until the 82nd minute to find the back of the net on a beautiful set up from Bryan Soucy (Windham) to Ike Doiron (Wilton) to tie things up at 1-1. The Mariners recorded 14 shots in the second half alone, but could not break the tie, sending the game into overtime.
Frost started the first overtime with a breakaway, but his shot went wide keeping things tied. Berenyi had a chance for the Eagles with eight minutes left in overtime, but Wil Huston (Hampden) slid to break up the opportunity. Just a minute later Frost shook his defender and had a 1-on-1 breakaway with Mariner keeper Joshua Reeks (Bedford, N.H.). Reeks made an impressive stop, running out to challenge Frost and breaking up the scoring chance.
The Mariners created a couple of chances late in the first overtime, but neither team could capitalize on their opportunities, sending the game to a second overtime period.
Berenyi converted on a penalty kick with 1:45 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Eagles to the North Atlantic Conference victory.
Reeks ended the day with six saves, while Cody Gross recorded nine saves in net for the Eagles.
The Mariners fall to 3-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the NAC, while the Eagles improve to 6-5-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Maine Maritime will return to action next Saturday, October 17, at New England College.
